Chess for Vets & First Responders

OUR DEMYSTIFYING CHESS WORKSHOP #1 IS BEING OFFERED FOR VETERANS AND FIRST RESPONDERS!

Instructor: FIDE MASTER Sunil Weeramantry

Chess is a great activity for: • Social connection and recreation • Therapy (including PTSD) • Mentoring young people • Community engagement

Even if you’ve never played chess, this 5-hour workshop will teach you the basics from rules and piece movement to beginning tactics. The workshop will also prepare you to use chess as a mentoring tool.

The workshop includes NSCF’s curriculum outline, referral to grade appropriate curriculum resources, and on-going training online (individual accounts set-up instructions are supplied with your workshop materials).

Our goal is to provide regular opportunities for veterans and first responders to play chess as a recreational activity, to assist those who want to use chess to engage other veterans and for those who might like to mentor young people in our school and community programs. We are especially looking to work with School Resource Officers who help keep our schools safe and can use chess as a way to create positive relationships with the students.

Normally $250, this class is generously sponsored by the City of Sunrise. Space is limited. You must provide either your service branch, or your police/fire or other first responder agency name.
